Book Review: Salep and Ginger by Jane Gundogan
Updated: a day ago
Ginger Knox thought she was living her best rom-com life. She had the job, the apartment in Notting Hill (adjacent), and an honest to God Hemsworth clone for a fiancé, but when she arrived home one surprisingly sunny February afternoon to catch her man with his tighty whitey’s around his ankles and his secretary *insert eye roll here* in their bed, the tenuous facade of her life dissolved in a split second. It was time for Ginger to become the leading lady in her own love life. And that’s just what she planned to do until her life is, once again, thrown into disarray when her flight home for Christmas was grounded. Suddenly she’s stranded in Istanbul, Turkey, with the man of her dreams. Of course, it’s the same man she had the near one-night stand with – and who knew he was one of the most famous men in Turkey! Between Sydney, London and Istanbul, Ginger was resigned to the fact that she may never get her Happily Ever After, but what about her Happily Right Now?

Salep and Ginger is such an enjoyable read that I couldn't put it down until I found out what happened next. The story follows Ginger as her seemingly perfect life with her Chris Hemsworth clone is shattered. With a bunch of quirky, lovable friends behind her she moves on with her life and soon finds herself in a whirlwind of a (passionate) mess. Salep and Ginger is a hot and steamy romance which I found myself getting lost in. It is sweet and spicy and full of delicious twists.
It was time for me to become the leading lady in my own life.
While trying to forget about her Thor-like dream guy, one of her friends sets her up with someone new. Enter Aydin, a Turkish (and famous) heart throb who makes Ginger (and the reader) feel something again. But, after leaving to go back to home, Aydin leaves her feeling like a fool until her own trip home leaves Ginger stranded in the same country as Aydin - Istanbul. Ginger enjoys her time in the beautiful country and meets some wonderful new friends that we instantly fall in love with.
What promises did Nate make to you? My first born? My soul? Both? Because I've got to tell you, I've already sold my soul, and I made a good profit for it.
I find myself living the story through Ginger's eyes, I could feel and experience everything she felt and did. This story is written incredibly well and flows effortlessly and the characters are developed perfectly. Ginger had me laughing-out-loud at times, she is the of the best characters I have read in a long time. Salep and Ginger is an honest and realistic romance with just the right amount of suspense. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a story about love, friendship, and family.
